Why are you in tech?
I am a technologist at heart, always looking for a way for technology to solve a problem because I deeply believe that the world is a better place thanks to innovation. Tech means so much more to humanity than just social media and selfies: it has been gradually transforming things like health, science, education, commerce, business, and transportation for a hundred years. We have to be thoughtful and responsible about all of the unintentional consequences along the way, but I have deep conviction that technology will transform our lives for the better.
What is different about the growth stage?
It’s a magical moment where after years of doubt and uncertainty entrepreneurs have figured out product-market fit and everything is finally starting to work. But along with that comes this new thing called growth and a fresh set of problems: rapidly building their team while preserving culture, paying off that engineering debt while still growing, deepening their distribution/marketing reach to compete with the big guys, and more. We’ve built a dedicated practice around the specific challenges of growth and are really proud to be able to help our companies as they venture into a whole new chapter in their journey towards being an enduring company.
Where are you investing right now?
We’re in this renaissance moment where technology is finally making its way to previously reluctant corners of the economy at the intersection of technology with traditional industries. The more boring the end market, the more interested I am in how technology can transform it. Healthcare, financial services, entertainment, real estate, agriculture, heavy industry, and more…if there is a role for technology to disrupt it, count me in!
Who is your hero?
The 10x engineer, scientist, or inventor. They are the lifeblood of every investment we have ever made at Kleiner Perkins, and more broadly, are the ones that move humanity forward in every discipline.
