K2 Space: Building Bigger

For the last decade, the satellite industry chased affordability, and the consensus was that smaller satellites were the only way to achieve it. The problem is that every mission in space comes down to three things, power, aperture, and mass; smaller satellites meant lower throughput communications, less capable sensing, and little room for compute. Four years ago, Karan & Neel Kunjur took the contrarian bet that the future was building bigger, convinced that the most important missions in space would demand more of all three, and that with the right engineering, bigger was not synonymous with prohibitively expensive. They founded K2 to produce the largest, highest-power satellites that have ever existed, at scale.

Delivering on this vision meant conquering countless engineering challenges at once, including propulsion, with an electric thruster four times more powerful than anything that had ever flown; power, with giant deployable solar arrays and high-voltage systems that historically took decades and exquisite budgets to build; and radiation, hardening every circuit to survive the higher orbits where small satellites can’t operate. Satellites of this class demand extreme vertical integration, so K2 built nearly every subsystem in-house. This March, all of them flew together for the first time. K2 launched Gravitas, one of the largest and highest-power commercial satellites ever flown. Mission success. The platform is real, and it is flying.

The past year has stacked commercial wins on top of engineering ones. K2 has now signed over $1 billion in commercial and government contracts, all built on a single platform designed to handle any orbit, carry any payload, and serve any mission. SES selected K2 to build the satellites for its next-generation meoSphere constellation, one of the largest commercial satellite contracts in the industry’s history. On the government side, K2 partnered with Anduril on Golden Dome, where it will serve as the host spacecraft for space-based interceptors; won a missile warning and missile tracking contract with the Space Force, deploying new capabilities in MEO; and secured its first program of record, PTS-G for the US Space Force. Commercial and government customers alike are converging on the same conclusion: the future is higher power, and K2 is uniquely positioned to deliver it.

The next phase is all about scaling. K2’s Torrance factory was designed from day one for a production rate the satellite industry has simply never operated at. What comes off the line will keep growing as well. The Giga-class platform on the horizon shares the same architecture as the satellite flying today, designed to bring massive amounts of power, and eventually compute, to orbit.

The name “K2” is a quiet statement of ambition. A Kardashev Type II civilization is defined by its ability to build giant structures in space, the kind that could one day ring the sun and collect its energy without limit. Every step toward it requires more power in orbit than the previous, and someone has to build the structures that get us there.
